This guide will walk you through how to install slc’s Wineskin for macOS 10.14 Mojave and earlier. If you are using macOS Catalina 10.15 or later, view the Catalina tutorial instead.

Step 1: Download the Wineskin¶

Download the osu! Wineskin from slc:

To play osu! on macOS a compatibility layer called Wine is used. A Wineskin allows a preconfigured version of Wine to be bundled as one app so that you can get right into the game without messing about with the settings.

Once it has downloaded, extract the .zip file.

Move it outside of your Downloads folder, such as your Desktop. This is really important, as not doing so could lead osu! to be sandboxed.

We also recommend downloading Technocoder’s osu!macOS Agent program, since it’ll be used throughout this guide. In general, it’s a great tool that every macOS osu-stable player on Wine should have. However, this is optional (though strongly encouraged) and alternative instructions are provided for those who are comfortable with digging deeper.

Warning

On 12 October 2020 a bug was introduced with an update for osu!macOS Agent. It caused Wineskin.app to display a error that left the settings menu unopenable. You’ll need to download the newest version of osu!macOS Agent, which was updated on 23 January 2021. See Wineskin.app doesn’t open, even if osu! does / exec[number].bat problem.

Step 2: Repair the Wineskin¶

If you try to open the Wineskin immediately, macOS will say that it’s broken.

1. Open osu!macOS Agent

2. Click the Troubleshoot tab

3. Click Scan

4. Once the scan is complete, click Repair

If it was successful, you should see a Fixed indicator next to Quarantineattributeispresent in the log.

On the bleeding edge? You can also use the Terminal to repair your Wineskin.

1. Open Terminal. It should be in your Applications/Utilities folder.

2. Type the following command.

where ~/path/to/my/osu!.app is the filepath to your osu! install.

For example: if my osu!.app was in the Desktop, the command to enter would be:

Below are some helpful tips if you’re a bit lost, but if you know what you’re doing feel free to skim over them.

Note

For an application with the name osu!.app, the ! will confuse the Terminal window. Therefore, you must escape it by prefixing the ! with a (backslash) to form osu!.app. It is also recommended you enclose the filepath in quotation marks.

Note

You may be asked for your password. While entering your password the cursor might blink but you won’t see any characters appear on the screen - this is normal! Just proceed to type your password as if there was a dialog box there, and hit Enter once you’re done. (If you stuffed it up you’ll get another chance to retype it.)

Tip

If you get a Permissiondenied error it means you aren’t using an administrator account. In your Terminal window, type:

where administrator is the name of your system’s admin account. When the Password: prompt appears, enter your password for administrator (or whatever your admin account is). Then try running the Terminal command again (or to do this automatically, type sudo!!).

If you don’t know which account is your admin account (like if you use a family computer), go to the Applemenu (top-left corner of the screen) > SystemPreferences... > Users&Groups and you should be able to see which account is your administrator account. You’ll still need the password to execute the command though.

On older macOS versions, you may get a warning that looks like this.

Type your password as normal, as shown above.

Tip

Having trouble finding the filepath of your osu! installation? You can drag and drop the file from your installation directory (or the Desktop) to get the path!

Danger

Unless you do something incredibly stupid, you probably won’t completely stuff your computer. That being said, if you do something incredibly stupid, you’ll stuff your computer. The sudo command allows your local user account to perform otherwise restricted actions, so please don’t go around typing random things if something’s not working - ask us a question instead!

Step 3: Updating osu!¶

At this point, you should have already repaired osu! and now you’re set to open it. In some cases, this will work perfectly, but for most people including myself, osu! will be stuck in an update loop. It can even be difficult to kill the process once it starts updating.

Tip

If you ever have trouble closing osu! once it’s stuck in an update loop, see Common issues: osu! won’t close.

Note

Does osu! appear to be running fine? If you’re not stuck in an update loop, then you can easily skip this section.

1. Open osu!macOS Agent

2. Click the Other tab

3. Click Update osu!

This will download the latest executable from the osu! servers and replace the existing osu!.exe inside your Wineskin wrapper.

If you’re brave enough to go it alone, these steps will get you the latest version of osu! running - avoiding the possibility of an update loop.

1. Download osu.exe from osu.ppy.sh/home/download.

2. Locate where osu!.app (your Wineskin) is installed

3. Right click on it and select ShowPackageContents

4. You should now see three files/folders: Contents, drive_c and Wineskin. Click drive_c.

5. From here, click osu!.

6. From here, locate osu!.exe and replace this file with the updated version that you just downloaded. Make sure you keep the filename the same.

Step 4: Run osu!¶

Now everything should be good to go! Click osu!.app in whichever directory you placed it in and try it out for a spin!

How to Install S & S Windows Applications on a MAC Computer Using Wineskin

What is Wineskin?

Wineskin is a tool used to make ports of Windows software to Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard (or later). The ports are in the form of normal Mac application bundle wrappers. It works like a wrapper around the Windows software, and you can share just the wrappers if you choose (that is the strategy used here). Best of all, it’s free and does not require installation of the Windows OS!

Installation Instructions

1. 1. Click on the Wineskin download link. The download will start automatically and show up in your downloads tool bar at the bottom of your browser screen as Wineskin Winery.app V…zip. When the download has completed, double click it to open it in a new finder window.

1. Double click the download labeled “Wineskin Winery App”
2. Once the app has created a new desktop icon, which will show up in the same finder
   window as your download, double click on the Wineskin Winery icon.
3. This will bring up a security window, asking if you would like to open the Wineskin Winery application which was downloaded from the Internet (even though it is from an unidentified developer), select Open.
4. Once the app is installed, it will automatically open. Select the bottom option that says
   Create New Blank Wrapper.
5. Type in the name of the program you are installing (this set of instructions creates a wrapper for the SewArt application. You should replace SewArt with the name of the program you are installing, such as SewWhat-Pro, SewWrite, etc.). Select OK.
6. Once the wrapper is created, go to the S & S product download page for the program you wish to install (for example, click Shop->SewArt to access the SewArt webpage). Click the Download (Mac) version button.
7. This will once again create a download in your browser. When the download has finished, if
   your settings automatically open the downloaded app, you will receive an alert saying your
   computer cannot open the application. Select OK.
8. Single click your Downloads folder (in your dock at the bottom of your screen).
9. Select the Open in Finder option
10. Right click (two finger tap on your mouse pad) the install app
11. This will pop up a menu. Hover over the Open With option. Select the Other… option.
12. In the window that pops up, type in the Search box the name of the wrapper you created in Step 6 (SewArt in this case).
13. Click the box next to the “Always Open With” option
14. Double click the wrapper you created in Step 6 (SewArt in this case)
15. If your security preferences do not allow for unidentified developers, click OK on the
    security alert that pops up. If no security alert pops up, continue to the next step.
16. Right click on the install app, and select the Open With then the SewArt option (this will be
    based on the name of the wrapper you created in Step 6).
17. Select Open in the security alert that pops up.
18. The SewArt installer will now open. Select Yes.
19. Read the Terms and Conditions, and select Yes to agree and continue with the install.
20. Select Close once the install has completed.
21. Select OK when the alert box pops up saying the program has been installed.
22. Right click on the new icon created on your desktop (.ink) and select Open with then
    Other…
23. Search again for the wrapper you created in Step 6
24. Important: To skip this step in the future, select the box next to the option Always Open With.
25. Select the wrapper you created in Step 6.
26. The program (SewArt in this case) will now open, and you can use it just like you would on a Windows computer!

Use the MAC Download button on the product page to download the zipped S & S application Wineskin Wrapper to the Download folder on your MAC. For example, if you are installing SewWhat-Pro, the zipped wrapper file will be named Wineskin-SewWhat-Pro.app.zip. Unzip it and run it to install the product. You may be prompted that “SewWhat-Pro (or whatever application you are installing) is an application downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it?” Select “Open” to continue with the installation. You may have to change your security settings to allow the file to run, as explained here. The Wineskin programs will have a wine colored icon next to the file name after they are installed (see figure below).

Once the installation is successfully completed and you open the application, the S & S product application registration box will open. You may now choose to continue using the product as a Demo or enter your registration information if you purchased a license.

Wineskin Engines use WineskinX11, a custom version of X11 (required by Wine) made from XQuartz, which is an x.org based X11 server. It does not use Apple's X11.app. You can have it use XQuartz.app instead of WineskinX11 if you so choose. Wine versions from around 1.5.26+ have a Wine Mac driver that can also be used instead of needing X11.
